All last season I bagged on Mira. I felt like her relationship with Spartacus was just bad writing... it didn't seem believable to me. Practically every fiber of his being had been devoted to the memory of Sura, and I sort of assumed that his total fidelity to her would continue post-mortem. I didn't buy that he could switch tracks so easily from SuraSuraSuraSura to OH HEY, it's Mira. (Andy!Spartacus was able to maintain that totally broken quality and emotional distance and between himself and Mira, which was totally lacking in Liam!Spartacus' interactions with her.)

But now that Mira is gone, I see why we needed her. She humanized Spartacus. We saw him talk about things other than war and plans and strategy. We saw the man on a personal scale. Now that he doesn't have an intimate confidante, he's become much more of the one-dimensional leader on a pillar. He's bigger than himself, and is now more legend than man. We as the viewers have lost that personal connection to him. He's got less screen time so far this season, and I think we're supposed to feel as removed from him as the average individual in the Rebel horde. He's now more of an archetype than an actual person.
