I didn't dislike Mira as a person. I just didn't "see" that relationship. I agree she humanized him, but I think they could have written it more interestingly.

As with Spartacus becoming more of an archetype now (and I must admit I'm behind on viewing), I think that would make sense.
I mean, unless they're going to retcon the shit out of history, things are not ending well for him...and at least some of his men. So it would make sense to distance him from the audience emotionally, because he's going to end up on a Roman cross.
If they're planning on some side characters to survive (and I'm not sure they are) it would make sense to put them more in the spotlight over time, and to distance themselves from Spartacus a bit to cushion the blow.
