Oh yeah, the negotiation of the marriage is totally the spine of the show. The Cold War's more like a metaphor for marriage, two people not understanding each other etc. rather than the other way around. They've been married for like 15 years, but just now something's changing. And all the relationships on the show are kind of played that way--there's also an interesting marriage going on across the street where the husband's just come out of deep cover.
The spy stuff is really fun but we know how it turns out historically so the suspense comes from whether they'll get caught or their kids will find out etc.
