I think you actually missed the point of the chapter which contains the memories Snape gave to Harry. Which is a real shame because it adds so much dimension to his character and very nicely explains his actions and personality to a point where I think most (if not everyone) would be hard-pressed to *not* feel sympathy or sorrow for his life and situation, despite his poor decisions.
