there's also patrick ness' chaos walking trilogy, in which the human colonisers of a faraway planet are 'infected with a germ' that makes their thoughts visible and also communicates the emotion behind it, iirc. so everyone walks around with a cloud of this 'noise' around their head and walking past people it can get really loud, so much so that the main character considers it a relief when he finds an area where it's completely silent. (and then everything goes to shit.) they're really fun books, i highly rec them.
