That's assuming the author's deliberately drawing out the ending. It's also a really entitled assumption that any fic author owes anyone to write more. Hey, when it's free, the author doesn't owe anybody a damn thing. The whole fic can be dropped, readers or not, for any reason. It's only when someone causes an obligation through paying money that you yowl.
