When I was in middle/high school (morese middle as I remember) it was kind of a social thing that I didn't pay a lot of attention to. Not overt, like, "you're not ~cool~ because you've never been to third base!" or whatever but the kind of thing kids/teens hold up as a way of showing off and preening, like so many other things they do.
