That's exactly how I feel. I became a Star Wars fan 11 years ago and loved the original series. Then I moved on to the expanded universe and it was just - horrible. Utterly disappointing. The Thawn Trilogy wasn't so bad. And the Dark Empire comic that came afterward in chronology was okay. But then, set 7 years after ROTJ, Kevin J. Anderson's werid pointless mess ushered in the increasingly stupid, seemingly endless fodder that filled the expanded universe. It was painful to read.
And George Lucas put the nail in the coffin with The Phantom Menace. I think that's the day my childhood ended.
