Audiobook recs

My boss allows us to listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks at work on your phones/mp3 player. So myself and a couple coworkers decided to start an audio "book club".

So, I am trying to figure out 5-6 for them to choose from. These are the info I got from them.
-Nothing like "Star Trek" (I think they think I am obsessed with Star Trek or something o.O)
-They prefer drama to comedy
-Horror aspects a plus
-No hard fantasy like LOTR/GOT
-Not super sexually explicit (we will be listening to and discussing it at work)
-Has to have an audiobook version
-Prefer more modern books (no Dickens/Shakespeare/etc)

I think for the first book we will be doing The Martian by Andy Weir (I listened to and loved it). But I'd like to give them more options.

Any suggestions?

losing respect for someone you like

We've talked about this before with celebs, but what about a time this has happened with a person you know IRL?

A few days ago I was talking with my trainer and the night manager in my department (i.e. the manager I usually work with). She does some things that annoy me but she's also sweet and I like working with her. But a story came up that my trainer knows about and she told me what happened. She doesn't like dogs and several years ago her husband had a dog who got on her nerves so much that once when he was out, she put the dog in her car, drove several miles away from home, and released it. Then when her husband got home she told him the dog ran away. She still has never come clean to him - and she seemed totally unapologetic about it, like, she acted like it was on the same level as drinking out of the orange carton and pretending she hadn't.

I just sat there horrified for a few minutes. What the fuck????? I would say I hoped the dog was okay, but let's be real, it's probably not. I'd be surprised if it were still alive. I would have gotten angry about it if she weren't a manager with control issues in a workplace that has drama problems. It would have been professional suicide to confront her, especially about something that can't be fixed now. But I was just dumbstruck.

So much respect lost :(

Non-shippy pon farr fuck-or-die fic?

I have a weird request. I want to read a Star Trek (TOS or nu!Trek) fic that involves the typical trope of "Spock is in pon farr, someone has to have sex with him or he'll die."

Except...I want this to not be a shippy fic. Kirk is not conveniently secretly in love with Spock or attracted to Spock before this happens. Nor do he and Spock fall in love during the pon farr sex, or after the pon farr sex. Or at any time at all. Kirk has sex with Spock because Spock is his friend and first officer and he will do anything to save his life, and Spock has sex with Kirk because he is in pon farr and will fuck anyone who lets him.

No don't get me wrong -- I LOVE LOVE LOVE the typical slashy type of pon farr fic. But I have read a huge variety of K/S pon farr fic, and yet I have never once come across a scenario where Kirk really genuinely just wants to save Spock's life.

So if anyone knows of and can link me to a fic with this scenario, I'd love to read it!

(Someone other than Kirk as the pon-farr partner is okay too, by the way.)

Does anyone have Over enthusiastic doctor friends?

A 'friend' of mine is a psychologist and she either a) never believes me when I say I'm sick (because I don't look sick??? You've never studied physical health in your LIFE) or she'll give me a diagnosis. Ie. oh you're nauseous after donating blood? Must be anxiety!

No it isn't. I'm not anxious, the actual medical doctors keep an eye on me and I get lower blood pressure than I should after donating.

Urgh just stop trying to doctor me, especially in areas out if your expertise (brain damage and the like. Not your run of the milk mental illnesses like depression)

I can see why her depressed bf would leave her if it's shitty diagnosis after diagnosis

I haven't even graduated from law school yet and already I have family members asking me for legal advice or suggesting that when I've passed the bar I could do their wills for them or represent them for free.
