Do not agree in the slightest. Sorry, OP. I know most people rec that fic as one of the best in the fandom, but it's one of the reasons I hate AUs. Because it is pretty well written, but has nothing to do with Sherlock. So I was several chapters and thousands of words in, when I went up to get a snack and wondered: why am I reading this? This isn't Sherlock fanfic. Which is fine of course, but not what I wanted. As for the movie in the fic, it sounded sort of pretentious and boring tbh.

RPF in disguise mostly.

ayrt

I sort of thought so, and it holds up for all the random famous people who show up. But for MF & BC? They're very different from their characters. Granted, the John and Sherlock in the fic are very different from the canon characters as well. But they don't really seem to match up with MF & BC either.

It's really not. It's just a Sherlock AU, that's all. For some reason the fact that it's a Sherlock AU in which John and Sherlock are actors seems to really be breaking people's brains. But that's truly all it is.

In fact, the author stated quite explicitly, back when the story was being posted, that it was not RPF. Also, there's this, which I'm quoting from her LJ page:

So you can imagine that more than one reader had a bit of a flashback when Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were each other's dates to the Emmys. [...] I was, however, relieved to see people saying "Well, that isn't how I pictured it, because I imagined Sherlock and John, not these two." I'm glad to have that distinction preserved, because it was hard work keeping Performance firmly out of the RPF category. A lot of real actors make appearances in it (John is friends with Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connolly, Natalie Portman talks to them at a party, etc) but the two main characters are that...characters, and not meant to be skins over the actors who play them.

... yeah, it's still RPF, tho.

How so?

I have no idea how you are coming to this incorrect conclusion.
