To be fair, figure skating is EXPENSIVE. You have to pay for coaching, for rink time/access, costumes/equipment, transportation... and then you still need money to live on when you're training. It's entirely possible that he might have luxury clothing given to him by sponsors, but not enough money to sustain a skating career.

His remarks about the Sochi protesters weren't good. I think perhaps his obsessive love for Russian culture combined with his relatively protected and privileged position is blinding him to the big picture.
