The relative percentage is probably no worse than the average fandom, but in terms of absolute numbers, yeah, I'd guess there's a lot.

(Just looking at Ao3, Movies > Avengers (Marvel Movies), 85% of the fics are marked as complete. (Sherlock - which has 20K more fics -- has about the same percentage, GoT is at 80%, and Doctor Who and Related Fandoms is @90%)

Pretty certain it's like that for a lot of "megafandoms" when it comes to WIPs. There's always the huge influx, but only a few multi-chapter stories actually ever get finished.

I'd love to do the numbers on AO3 for a lot of the megafandoms, but idk how you'd be able to weed out multi-chapter fics v. done-in-ones.

Oh, true, I just hit the "complete" checkbox, but you're right, a good chunk of the completed ones are probably oneshots.

Re: NS

This is further complicated by the fact that some authors wait until their multichapter works are actually complete before posting them. (I love you, authors who do this!) So I think you had exactly the right idea with just comparing the percentage of completed fics in each fandom.

Though if someone were interested in comparing the amount of completed longfic (as opposed to multichapter works posted in parts) in each fandom, that would be doable. Just decide what qualifies as longfic for the purposes of your assessment (10,000+ words? 50,000+ words?); order the fandom's fic by word count and figure out how many longfics there are; select only the completed works and repeat; and compare the results.

SA

Oh, I just remembered that there's actually an easier way of comparing longfics! You can put e.g. "words:>50000" in the "Search within results" field and filter fics that way.

SA (again)

I got curious and checked the percentages of complete 10,000+ word fics in the fandoms you already did. The results are: GoT (43%), MCU (64%), Sherlock (65%), Doctor Who (76%). So, yeah, MCU looks totally average as far as longfic completion rates go.

And the numbers are also dependent on each author correctly tagging their work as either In-progress or Completed.

But at any rate, my initial comment was that I didn't suppose that MCU was that much worse than any other fandom large enough to have a hefty sample size.

ETA: I also checked two smaller fandoms: Saint Seiya has a 86% completion rate, and Saiyuki is the completion champ at 96% (although there there are only 8 fics out of 1858 that are over 50K.)

I'm guessing they're in Digimon fandom together?

Re: NF

I've just gotten re interested in Digimon so it kinda surprised me.

The Avengers fandom is pretty shitty, so you shouldn't be surprised? A lot of people jumped on the bandwagon when it was super popular to do so and then jumped off when they got tired of it.

This sounds like a certain ex-friend of mine who never realized what a pile of shit she was. She'd blame everyone else for her shitty behavior. But since Digimon is related to it, then it's probably not her.

this is boring and makes no sense without details. (maybe the same details would have saved it from the failbar as well.)

Sounds like a girl I know in the Game of Thrones fandom. She says the most horrible, disgusting things about other members of the fandom, but the instant that someone reacts to her remarks, she instantly switches to playing the victim. It's as though she doesn't even realize that she creates all of that drama herself. What makes it even worse is that she is a BNF.

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Who is it? I want to see just how wanky she is.

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I should name and shame, but she's a Cersei fan on tumblr and twitter. She always talks about how many other users and tags she has blacklisted, but then she seems to go out of her way to hate stalk those same users. If anyone voices an opinion that even slightly differs from her own, she mocks them as though they've committed some terrible crime.

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
urgh I can't stand when people talk about people they've blacklisted. Like warning people to avoid actually dangerous bullying users is one thing but when people on tumblr have a "page of people I dislike" and try to tell others to avoid them. It just looks so childish."stay away from this persopn , she's horrible. She disagreed with me"

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and this girl also bullies her own friends if they follow someone she considers to be 'gross' (aka: an opinion about a fictional character that is different than hers). Whatever you look at it, the girl loves drama, real or imagined. Perhaps I should name her after all, although she'd probably decide that I'm whatever random person she's decided to target this week.

Urgh, I knew it. I've honestly never encountered anyone worse in a single fandom before.
