is 'this is the end' a feminist film? (trigger warning for rape of men)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
i watched 'this is the end' for the first time today, but i wasn't expecting much. one thing did stand out, tho. in a post-apocalyptic world we have a bunch of men standing around discussing raping a woman, which is what we expect from hollywood. this woman then beats the shit out of the men, takes their stuff and leaves. which is awesome! there are actually two rapes in the film, both men! there's a scene early in the film when micheal cera sexually assaults rhianna, and she punches him square in the face. what do you all think? was this film much more feminist than you were expecting? i think i'm almost impressed.

I haven't seen the film, so I can't say for sure, but from your description it doesn't sound especially feminist.

However, I can say for pretty damn sure that raping men =/= feminism

I don't think they watched the movie either, as they sort of...didn't understand the scene with Emma at all.

Wait, they weren't discussing raping Emma. They were discussing about how didn't want to do it but were afraid since the house was full of guys, she would think that they would want to rape her, which is again, the last thing any of them wanted to do. And she overheard this and misunderstood, thinking they wanted to rape her and that's when she swung her way out of the house.

This movie isn't a feminist and it's not feminist. It's just a silly comedy with a few horror elements sprinkled in. It's not that deep.

Having ass-kicking women does not mean a movie is feminist. It just means it has some ass-kicking women.

Did you watch the film? This is the scene. http://youtu.be/twG_ccsz9OQ They are discussing how she might feel unsafe with a bunch of guys because one of them might set off a rapey vibe. They then talk about who would be the one to do it. They are specifically saying they WANT her to feel safe (one of them even comments that she will be like a little sister).

And sorry, but are you saying feminism means raping men? So rape IS okay in some circumstances according to you?

No, it's not. Sure it has some strong cameos from women, but it's predominantly a male cast.

Not...particularly? I mean, it wasn't ragingly misogynistic or anything, but it was a stupid comedy. And, fyi, raping men doesn't make a movie feminist. Raping men is bad too, friend. Don't rape anyone.

You seriously have no idea what the fuck you are talking about. It is very obvious that you either did not watch the movie or weren't able to follow along with the movie. That or this is a poor showing from your usual standards, radfem.
