(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)OP is referring to the character, not the actress. The character (Ivy), was an aspiring Broadway actress who at the end of the show finally achieved the professional success she had been dreaming of her whole life with her first starring role and a Tony. However, she also realized that she was pregnant by her on again off again boyfriend, who was a jerk so annoying even Jack Davenport's charm couldn't make him tolerable.
Ivy's mother (Bernadette Peters!) had also been a Broadway actress and had just won a Tony when she became pregnant with Ivy, and she had always been vocal about the idea that her career would have been better if she hadn't gotten pregnant just when she did. In the finale Ivy wonders if she is doomed to repeat her mother's mistakes, but she ends up deciding to take some time off from acting and keep the baby. In the closing montage you see her reconciling with her boyfriend and them cradling her stomach.
Because every strong, ambitious woman needs is to abandon her professional goals, become a mother and shack up with her cheating boyfriend. Gotta say I'm with the OP on this one.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-27 06:53 am (UTC)(link)But on the abortion side, it is a bit difficult for non-suicidal people to not take an association like that to heart. A part of them is thinking that having an abortion is killing themselves. They aren't just seeing a baby they are seeing into the same situation that brought them their own life, and it is much harder to think 'life means nothing' when you are thinking about your own life. Especially if you are glad to have had it.
Without the 'this could have been me' association or if she hated her life and had wished she'd never been born, then abortion might have been her choice. I would have found it hard to believe someone who just won a Tony and who would have been mentally comparing herself to the baby would have chosen to abort it.
Now that doesn't mean it would be completely unbelievable for her to give the child up for adoption or raise her by herself without the dad, but if she is happy with her life I don't see why she'd see it as a negative to repeat it. Ivy's mother might regret having her, but I'm sure Ivy was happy she was born, (and obviously I haven't seen this) and she might have decided she is happy having the life that her mother had (even if her mother was not.)
Different people want different things out of life.
I'd need to see the whole thing to decide if I think it would be truly out of character for her to choose to be with the father (even if it is doomed to fail), or keep the baby to raise herself. Like if something she missed in her childhood was having her father around, then I can see her choosing to be in a imperfect relationship to give her child something she longed for. People stay in bad marriages for years for this very reason.
Or if her parents gave her a childhood that she considered happy and good then only as an adult found out about her mother's regrets, I can see her recreating it because it had made her own life happy.
But there are obviously so many other stories that this wouldn't have fit with.
