The Escapist isn't bad as a whole but it has a couple of die-hard misogynists who tend to invade every thread about sexism or feminism and vomit angry neckbeared mouthfeces over it.

Thanks for that, was wondering if it was the community as a whole or not. So would you say its kinda like here whenever we have a radfemanon or other troll kind of people, in the sense that it isn't the whole communities thoughts on it?

As someone who's been on the site since 2010:

Hrm. Not quite. The difference is that said misogynists are long-standing, logged in posters who have been there for years and have attracted followings (to some degree) of the like-minded. Imagine if, say, instead of hit-or-miss teen comedy Chard or Noodles showed up to rag on bitches in every thread about sexism or feminism, and Case did absolutely nothing about it, but rather punished most of the people who responded to them.

Because the rules at the Escapist are a big part of the problem. Even on Kotaku, with Kinja, if some shithead shows up to rant about how hateful women or feminists are, you can just dismiss their comments. On the Escapist posts can never be perma-deleted, only hidden, and only by a moderator, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to keep them from commenting on your posts and filling up your inbox. The worst they can receive is a warning or a suspension or (maybe) a ban, and only if their "forum health meter" is completely full (i.e. they've shitspammed like ten people before you already with no consequences).

Worse, the rules the mods follow are bizarre. You can't personally attack someone, but if you do it in erudite language without cursing and don't name and posters specifically you can say absolutely anything you'd like about how Jews were responsible for the holocaust or how women deserve to be raped or how black people are inherently inferior to white people and Asians. Absolutely anything. No consequences from the moderators. But if you responded heatedly to that comment, swear, or call them racist/sexist/a bigot - guess what, here's your warning/suspension! And there are a couple of long term wastes of humanity on that site who've absolutely mastered the line between getting a warning or not and have spotless "forum health meters" despite every. Single. Post. Amounting to hate speech in certain countries.

Luckily they're usually drowned out by the good these days but there was a while - especially on women's issues/sexism/feminism - where they turned every single thread on the subject into unreadable, nauseating bullshit. Seriously, they were starting to make Kotaku look good in comparison.

Good lord.

holy crap, that is not how you run a forum.

it's amazing some women even get into video game in the first place, and manage to stay there.

Personally, I maintain my sanity as a woman gamer by not participating in fandom or visiting forums. At all. I just read articles and ask friends for recs.

Just to be clear, what exactly did you mean by your last sentence? Like you're surprised that women play video games in general or that you're surprised some go into online communities to talk about video games? Or is it that you're surprised that women stay in video game development with all the negative attention they get?

So not that different from the trogs at Rock Paper Shotgun then.
