How often do you look into the source material?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Given that you're introduced by an adaptation.

If I finish something and like it a lot, I'll usually check it out. So maybe 60% of the time?

If I hear about an adaptation that looks interesting then I'll usually read/watch the source material first and then see the adaptation.

I almost always try to. There are only three reasons why I wouldn't:

1) It isn't available in my country.
2) It has fifty-billion episodes/volumes/et cetera.
3) It's a video game (I suck at them).

If the source material is a book, almost always. If it's a movie or TV show from a different country, I'll check it out if it's available but will rarely go out of my way to find it. Same if it's a manga. If it's a Western comic book, never.

If I'm aware something is an adaption I will go for the original material first (most times, depending on how interesting the movie sounds)
If there's a book adaption of something I'm less likely to be interested.

Depends on what it is. With movies, if it's adapted from a novel/novel series that's not ungodly long or anything I usually try to read the book first. With anime I don't usually look into the source material (manga or light novel or whatever) unless I've really gotten into the show.

I read most of the Black Company series (skipped two and a half books because they had a different narrator who I couldn't stand) thanks to a Homestuck crossover fanfic. I don't think I've ever done that before or since, though.

If I really like something, I will.

Icon related: after watching S1 of Hannibal, I went and read SoTL and Red Dragon, and watched the film. Still haven't touched the books Hannibal & Hannibal Rising, since I've heard some mixed stuff about them.

It depends on how much I know about the source material, I guess. Though I usually end up preferring whichever version I saw first.

For example, I don't want to check out the older My Little Pony stuff because I know enough about it to know I wouldn't care for it. But I saw the 1947 version of Miracle on 34th Street first and I like it far more than the 90s version.

Sometimes. Not as often as I want to; the plans usually fall through or I keep pushing them off. If it's something relatively quick like a movie or a shorter book then alright, that might not be so difficult, but comics...comics are daunting. I did read some of Bucky's Winter Soldier story arc before the film came out (think I stopped before Steve died and Bucky became Cap), and the Arkham games coupled with the Nolanverse Batman films made me start reading some DC comics, but there's just too many. Too many and not enough time. :(

99% of the time, though it also depends on the medium and how faithful the adaptation is to the source material.

A lot of areas of Tolkien-verse that I am fond of is either very barely mentioned in the movies, or not at all due to the licensing situation. This is because the area I am most fond of is Silmarillion stuff, so I go looking up Silmarillion facts pretty often.

I admit though, I look them up on wikis now.

Fandoms I have only a casual interest in I get to know via wiki info as well.
