Having only read the first volume of xXxHolic a few years ago, I gotta ask: is there any good, coherent summary of the ending (and any relevant events beforehand), and the problems people had with it? I've found a lot of references to betrayal of character/character arcs, but I'm not quite sure if it's specifically people finding characters' actions ooc, or the way the ending was delivered, or a combination, or other things...

Mmh I'd say is a combination of both. Here is a good summary of the ending, but I couldn't find a coherent summary of the previous events so I'll do my best to summarize!

Spoilers ahoy~

- We discover that Watanuki is a clone/glitch of Syaoran (Clone No. 3?) created when the Tsubasa world got created. Wait, I got it wrong about him not being human. He is human, it's just that he's another Syaoran clone. He's just supposed to not exist.

- Tsubasa ends, and Yuuko can finally die in peace and telling Watanuki he has paid his debt. Watanuki takes over the shop, becomes Yuuko 2.0 (wearing kimonos, smoking from Yuuko's pipe, granting wishes, etc).

- The Doumeki that Watanuki was talking to is the grandson of Doumeki and Kohane (they married to have kids and that way not leaving Watanuki alone). It's been 100 years after Yuuko died.

- The end is Watanuki having a dream about Yuuko telling him (without words) that he is free to leave the shop. He doesnt, ends up staring up thinking about Yuuko. That part of the summary is up there.

- I forgot about this one, and it's not exactly relevant, but we find out Himawari has been married, and she calls Watanuki at the shop. This is during the "Watanuki's Grand Emo Isolation" period.

Way belated thanks for the link and summary! Wow, I think I get the frustration. I was about to write that "pulling a CLAMP" should be part of fan lexicon somehow, but there's so many ways CLAMP pulls a CLAMP.

Part of the problem was that the end came after many chapters in which almost nothing happened. It should have ended when Yuuko died and Watanuki took over the shop - it lost a lot of energy with Yuuko gone.

I started out shipping Watanuki/Himawari and Yuuko/Watanuki, but CLAMP pushed Doumeki/Watanuki so hard that I started shipping that as well. I knew it wouldn't be endgame, after all, CLAMP, but Doumeki and Kohane marrying each other because they were both in love with Watanuki and wanted to have children who would take care of him, that felt really sour to me.

All of Yuuko's talk about the importance of human relationships comes to nothing. Shizuka Doumeki cares for Watanuki, but for Watanuki, the members of the Doumeki family are interchangeable.

If you're going to read XXXholic, stopping when Yuuko dies is probably a good idea.

Almost forgot - the last chapters were plagiarised from inspired by Soseki's 10 Dreams, that's how much CLAMP cared about giving XXXholic a coherent ending.

Very belated thanks for this! Ohhh, CLAMP.
