Bryan Fuller DID NOT insist Hannibal was straight; he pretty much labeled him an up for anything guy.

Never apologize for rants. They fuel my power cells.

I was actually referring to Sherlock (there have been some egregious examples recently), but lawd does it apply to Hannibal too. I love Will and Hannibal's relationship. It's dark, complex, emotionally-charged, and fucked up beyond belief. Those aspects make it a really fascinating ship, but man do people fixate. See, I ship them, but I also ship pretty much everything else on the show, including Hannibal/Alana. The minute they got together, a shitton of Hannibal/Will shippers started spewing really awful hate in her tag and the ship tag. People are calling her a homewrecker, stupid, mean, bitchy, just because she disrupted the almighty NON-CANON peen-touching.

(She's also apparently a bitch for "abandoning Will". Because she should stick with an emotionally unstable attempted murderer who she never really dated over a sexy European man who she's been friends with for years and also hasn't killed anyone to her knowledge? yeahokay)

I was going to say "never apologize for rants", but uh, I guess my rant says that itself lol.

[spoilers for mid s2 hannibal]

[personal profile] beverlykatz 2014-04-26 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It is so very frustrating. For such a good fandom, Hannibal really has some pockets of terribleness. Particularly where the women on the show are concerned. When Miriam shot Chilton, her tag was filled with the most vile comments. People were saying she should be shot, have her other arm torn off, or just flat out thrown back in the well and left for Hannibal to torture and eventually murder. Because she acted in a moment of sheer terror after being brainwashed for two straight years. And nobody even liked Chilton until the previous episode! It was honestly disturbing.

Sherlock, though. Sherlock is about twelve billion times worse. I don't really consider myself part of the fandom anymore (although tbf that's also because I just don't think it's very well-written anymore, which is a whole 'nother rant lol). I just see this because I follow people who post it. The struggle is so real. :'(

Man, sort off the topic but I was a Chilton fan from minute one and never even thought him going more popular could turn into such an absolute trainwreck. Poor Miriam ): I'm glad I haven't been into the fandom for a while, it started out so nice too

Chilton is such a great character, and such a huge douchebag. Raul Esparza does a great job of making him appropriately slimy while still making him enjoyable to watch. I just wish people could appreciate his corrupt, ethically bankrupt ways without throwing Miriam under the bus like this. :(

I hope I'm not turning you off lol. For the most part, the fandom is terrific, which is why this stuff is so disappointing.

Ugh, the Alana hate is terrible.

I mean, I do think some of the frustration is with some of the decisions she's making, which I would put down to a problem with writing. (S1 Alana seems different to me than S2 Alana.)

But the hate she's getting is completely unwarranted. It's just butthurt shippers.

That is a beautiful icon.

I'm not quite caught up on Hannibal yet, but I did see the episode where Hannibal/Alana happened and thought it made plenty of sense from her perspective. Maybe some people had a knee-jerk reaction to it (considering all the things we've seen Hannibal do), but to hate Alana because she 'screws up' Hannibal/Will is just hilarious. They're both extremely fucked up ships, your ship doesn't 'have' to be canon and the way the story is laid out you could have both anyway.

Hee, thanks! I was basically throwing textures and gradients at the wall to see what stuck, and this one ended up pretty neat. :>

Yeah, I know people who dislike the ship because it's going to end awfully for Alana, and that's totally valid. But hating her because she "messed up" your non-canon ship? Man, since when was canon ever a reason to stop shipping? I still ship Will/Beverly and, well. We all know what happens there. :((

It did! I love the colors and clarity. It's such a gorgeous picture of her, too. So pretty.

IA. I don't know why people get so upset about this kind of thing when something being non-canon rarely stops them from shipping in the first place. If you dislike the pairing that's totally valid and fine, but to single out and hate on a character for 'breaking up' your non-canon ship is dumb. (And there are far better ways to spend your time, too...like actually shipping what you like and letting others do the same.)

Awww. :( Will/Beverly would've been adorable. I love that friendship, but I can easily see how they could progress into a romantic relationship.

that whole wank made me really angry

up until that point I wasn't bothered at all by the shippers.

the thing that really got me was the way they were arguing that it was about "REPRESENTATION!!!" because what the LGBT community really needs is representation in the form of a serial killer cannibal and the person he's manipulating. (because evil gay villians are something we really need more of, and not healthy, happy relationships.)

I just wish fandom in general would stop using LGBT rights issues to defend their shipping, it's tacky and awful.

(not to mention, why do you even care if a ship is canon or not? that has never stopped anyone from writing mountains of fanfiction.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Especially since gay guys don't care nearly as much as fangirls.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I really disagree with the dichotomy you're painting here. Both because 1) there are gay male fans who care about representation in media, just as much as "fangirls" do, and 2) there are plenty of lesbian/bi/etc. female fans whose calls for better representation of queer characters are grounded in a lot more than just wanting to see their fave ship become canon. (Slight tangent: I'm a queer woman, and I actually cried a little bit with joy when Anderson Cooper came out. Having one of my personal heroes--someone who's widely known and respected by a lot of people--come out felt hugely affirming to me, no matter that he's a gay man and I'm a bi woman.)

That said, I definitely agree with the comment pointing out that a predatory psychopath is maybe not the best choice of characters upon whom to pin our hopes of better queer representation in media. :-P
