It's an idiom from Catholicism. During the process of considering a person for canonization, they appoint someone to speak against them. The idea is that if everyone just agrees, "Oh yeah, awesome dude, let's make him a saint!" the decision won't be as balanced. So the speaker against canonization is the 'devil's advocate.'

That's not exactly what devil's advocate is referring to. It's a term of proxy, advocating for the "devilish" position to poke and prod at the "good" theory of anything to find where the holes and weaknesses might be that would either prove it to be other than good or facilitate fashioning a stronger argument.

But even from an angle other than the traditional meaning, yes, anyone designated a "devil" does absolutely need an advocate. Becuase just by virtue of being considered a devil, he will AUTOMATICALLY be discredited and listened to on less than a fair and balanced level. Accusations and the biases that follow matter.

Thank you for saying this. It's creeping me out seeing people grow up on Tumblr, arguing that anything OTHER than a mutual-admiration echo chamber is somehow bad because it's less comforting.

There have always been people who have felt that way. It's not some new Tumblr-centric phenomenon.
