I hate it too, for the many reasons you and the thread have given. It's why I love that Tamora Pierce's one character that has an action-heavy job and long hair wear it in a braid with a spiked strap in it. 'Cause that's just awesome.

Haven't read this book, but my mom has long hair that she usually puts in a braid. One time some guy kept touching it (as an excuse to touch her boob, because it was hanging in front of her chest) and she told him it had razor blades braided into it.

That's fucking stupid, though. You could easily hit yourself in the face with that spiked strap (or land on it when you go down). Why would someone think this is a good idea?
