Who else has been around for so long that they can't get over the fact that people use the term OTP unironically these days?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I have been because I've been reading it unironically. o_o

I've been in fandom close to a decade and always used OTP unironically.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
People used to use it ironically?
I've been in fandom almost a decade and I have never seen it be used unironically, but I rarely saw it until about three years ago.

Back when I first saw it used, it was usually in derisive address of the batshit shippers who spent all their fandom energy on fighting the cause of their One True Pairing and explaining why the rival ships were evil and wrong and less backed by canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok...
I have usually seen it be in the context of "This is a ship that I ship really strongly" regardless of whether or not the user would fight like that. (One person comes to mind who uses it a lot but also loves alternative ships).

Yeah, now it does. But once upon a time, it was used about people who devoted their lives to worship a fictional pairing.

I have literally never experienced this.

Yeah, I would really like to know what time period this person is talking about. Like, did they first see this five years ago? Ten years ago? Twenty+? Because I have never seen it used ironically, but I *have* seen it used derogatorily, as a way to make fun of people who get overly attached to a ship. But even then, they were taking a term that already existed in fandom and using it as an insult - the original usage was sincere.

I don't understand how it could be used ironically?
