Hilariously (or not) the same rules apply to airline pilots in the US. Men have to keep their hair short and their beards shaved (for safety reasons) but women are allowed long hair. It's one of those things I just don't get. If you're going to have one group of people with long hair allowed, freaking allow the other people to have long hair.

If the emergency oxygen masks deploy you can't get a good seal with beards. It is probably good enough, but I think many people want more than "meh, good enough" from the people keeping a plane in the air.
