This is exactly how I feel. I've yet to read anything by him that is worthy of his so called super star status as a writer.

I don't see it.

AYRT Agreed. Whether it's because I heard all the hype before I read anything by him, or whether he's just not my thing, or both I just don't know.

My SO loves his work, so I tend to assume the latter. There must be something there that I'm not getting, that makes everyone love his work.

He's not a superstar writer. He's a superstar collaborator. The stuff he's written on his own is good but it doesn't touch the Sandman series or the movie Coraline, which are both defined mainly by their visuals, although Gaiman gets all the credit for some reason.
