Honestly, I've never got why people like him so much. I'm not trolling I swear, but I always thought he was annoying and whiny. I mean, I also dislike most of the Weasleys so...
But I'm not a Malfoy fan either. I probably dislike Draco as much as Neville.

I don't hate the Weasleys, but they aren't my favorite. I like Lucius and Narcissa, at least as characters, but Draco is just an annoying bully. Neville, though, I love. I love his growth. In my opinion he was at least somewhat abused by his relatives, at least emotionally. And at the beginning he doesn't have his own wand. He's never been told that he's good or talented at anything, so he lives down to the lack of expectations.

But he grows. He grows from the accident-prone, not super smart boy into a brave man worthy of Gryffindor. I love the arc his character takes. He really comes into his own to eventually being the leader of the resistance at Hogwarts and standing up to Voldemort himself.

But really, we see inklings of the man he'll be in the first book where he stands up to the trio.

I do agree with you when it comes to the Malfoys. I love Lucius and Narcissa but can't stand Draco.

The thing is I don't quite see that growth you / everyone's talking about.

I mean, okay, it was brave to face Voldemort, but he didn't really have a choice and was no braver than, say, Ginny. Whether you like Ginny or not - and Heaven knows I don't - she shows actual character development.

However you've got a point with Neville's feeling abused and worthless and trying to overcome it. I actually kinda liked him back in Book 1 when he stood up to the trio but ended up disliking him by book 3 when it's shown that his worst fear is Snape. Seriously, Snape?! In a world where Voldemort and the Dementors exist?

Back when I read that book, I was around 12 or less and while I could totally empathize because I had a teacher who picked on me, I stood up to them and never let them really get to me. So I guess that for child me, Neville was just a coward. It's possible that first impression soured my appreciation for the character.

Voldemort and dementors exist, but they weren't personal and a current threat for Neville. Snape was. Snape actively bullied him as badly (and i think even worse) as he did Harry. Snape was an adult, a teacher, who specifically targeted Neville. I guess I relate to him in that sense because I had a teacher or two exactly like Snape, and they absolutely were my biggest fears in those moments even if there are scarier things in the world.

The thing is, not everyone reacts the same to bullying. Not standing up to bullies, especially adult ones, does not make you a coward. It makes you as much a survivor as someone who does stand up to them. Do you really honestly think standing up to Snape would have done any good? The Trio stood up to him, and it did no good at all. Sometimes the only thing you can do is keep your head down and wait for it to pass.
