I'll say this--ponytail is better than loose. And it's better if you have thick hair. I have long hair, usually in a braid, and I used to do a lot of sparring/grappling. If it's all consolidated in one spot, it's a lot harder to yank out and it doesn't hurt as much as someone just grabbing a handful and pulling (which is way more likely to rip it out). It's still a handle, which puts you at a bit of a disadvantage, but overall, it's not the worst thing ever (and if it's long enough, people think they can just grab it anywhere as a handle, and they do, and then they're surprised that no, that didn't work, I still have control of my head, but now you're in punching range).

But yeah, I understand that it looks pretty in comics and movies, but loose hair in action scenes still bugs me on some level.
