I feel you. I remember a scene in a diner where everyone randomly kills each other being the point at which I rolled my eyes and stopped reading. I do want to give it another shot someday, though.

I strongly encourage you to do so! The diner scene (as others have posted above) is from very early in the series and not representative of the tone it takes through the whole thing.

Of course, if it's just not your bag, that's cool too!

As far as I remember, though, there was a reason for that killing rampage? I think it gets explained later.

However I agree that it's not the kind of comics you can read in every circumstances. Some stories are a bit too heavy and sometimes you just aren't in the mood for that. Also there's a lot of text, rather literary, and since English is not my first language it took me some concentration to get through it... not something to read in the subway when you can't focus properly due to noise etc.

Pretty sure it had something to do with Death or someone who was visiting from hell.

I don't mind dark/heavy storylines; in fact, I started reading Sandman for that reason. I hated that scene in particular because it was executed in an insufferably annoying way and, like a lot of Gaiman's work, I felt like he was looking over my shoulder going "Wasn't that cool?! Wasn't that distuuurbing?!!"
