..a fanfiction makes you want to punch something.

Okay so I was bored and was feeling in the mood for Digimon 02 fanfic. I go browsing through and I find this

I am stunned. Now I am aware that the fandom seems to have a thing for making Osamu/Sam an abusive jerk for the sake of woobiefying Ken even MORE (I as a fan of Ken say that he's already ENOUGH of a woobie). IDK apparently yelling at a little sibling for getting into your stuff is a sign that you're a monster.

But RAPE?

ALL OF MY NOPE. ALL OF IT. JUST WHAT THE FUCK?

.....................No. What. What the hell.

I'm not really familiar with the fandom in question, but...

People enjoy writing different things. What one person sees as totally OOC another might think is IC -- or, at the very least, a good way to prompt two other characters to hook up. It's quite common, really. Just ignore it if it's not your thing.

This subject is something that should be handled more carefully and with more thought. I guess what really bugs me is the idea of making a teenager character rape his sibling because "he seems kinda mean in the show" and because you want the sibling to be more of a victim and go through something awful just to be comforted. Just being used as a plot device.

It seems like melodrama using rape as a prop. and it's the kind thing I'd advise someone not to throw in as a plot device. Also it seems kinda offensive to use sibling rape to get two characters to hook up.
Also the whole idea doesn't fit IMO because in the show we see that despite his jealousy Ken loved his brother and grieved a lot for his death. The death of that sibling effected the whole family. In the show the sibling's memory is respected. If Osamu were really abusive, I think well the aftereffects would have been a lot different. So it just honestly doesn't fit.

I've seen a good fic including rape (ironically also in the same fandom) where the rapist character was an OC a creepy older teacher and it actually fit them rather than twisting an existing character. I dunno it just worked better , the fanfic dealt with the aftereffects and the person obviously did their research and worked out a lot of it.
It didn't feel like ..well melodrama.

"Rape" isn't like other things "used to get two characters to hook up" , it requires careful portrayal , and respect toward the victims. There's a responsibility to portray things with respect to the severity of it. Incest rape even more so. That's the issue.

Of course it should be handled carefully, but most of the time it isn't. That's all I was saying. I didn't mean to imply that I thought rape was a fine and dandy way to get two characters to hook up -- but it is commonly used like that (and not just in fanfiction), which is what I was referring to.

It's just an old, old issue and it's akin to tilting at windmills, y'know?

I liked rape angst totally unrealistic fics when I was a teen and I'm ok with it. I'd say it provided a sense of closure? I didn't project plot on RL or analysed it. So, some people just like it sometimes.

Omg. I hate gratuitous rape in fic anyway, and scenarios like that especially. (Gratuitous meaning it's just there for generating angst and has no real effect on the plot as a whole.)

And yeah. Ken is already fucked up, but man, the fandom likes to really fuck him.

Things like rape and abuse really have to be done carefully and well with respect to the people who it happens to. That's my biggest issue. It just feels...really freaking disrespectful. Also something about the way they tend to make a dead kid into an absolute monster is a little bothersome to me.

EDIT: read the fic. Forced prostitution? HO shit this is some fucked up stuff. Hooo shit

This kind of stuff isn't a prop to use in shipfics. This happens...to actual PEOPLE. I mean I don't think it's wrong to ever MENTION abuse and rape in fiction because then I'd be a huge hypocrite. But people need to remember this happens to actual PEOPLE. Living breathing people.

So you should make sure you have a good reason to use it and you do your homework.

Dude, is that really the first Osamu/Ken rape fic you've ever come across? Are you new or something? People have been writing that kind of thing since back when the show first aired. Some people have kinks for that kind of thing, or just like to write dark fic. It isn't meant as a personal offense to you. Just because it isn't a very good fic doesn't mean the author should be punched for choosing the subject, especially since they clearly warned for the objectionable content. You have no one to blame for looking but yourself.

Okay maybe the punching thing was over the top. I wouldn't punch the author anyway because that would do nothing.

I just feel annoyed by the way it's being used, it just feels so damn disrespectful. I don't object to it being used EVER though just...when it is people should work extra hard.

Hell I remember reading another Digimon fic that had an OC teacher raping Yamato. That time the fic felt like it did it's research and conveyed the subject well. I actually sorta liked the fic because of that. They actually put a LOT of thought into it. Whereas this fic reads and feels like a person writing it for the sake of being dark and gritty. (I know because I had a stage where I went through it too). It doesn't really read like a kink fic either, just a 'trying to be grimdark' thing, melodrama.

I don't object to the existence of rape and abuse in fics, but I wish more people would keep in mind "this actually happens to people" and treat it with more thought and more caution.

TL;DR: If you're going to write this subject , please try to do it in a way that's more thought out and more sensitive to the fact that this happens to real people.

My advice is that you stop reading rape kink fics.

I don't think this was a rape kink fic. Just someone attempting to be "dark and serious" or whatever.
