Weird Fandom Associations?

[personal profile] th0rns_n_r0ses 2014-04-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have any weird fandom associations? For example, hearing Sweater Weather by The Neighborhood makes me think of Welcome to Night Vale - No, I don't know why. The show Psych always makes me think of The Sims, because I spent a snow day sitting around watching Psych on Netflix and playing Sims 3, so I always associate them together.

What are yours?

Penguins will always remind me of Simon Blackquill from Ace Attorney. Mixture of his comment from the DLC where he says the aquarium in the case has a fine penguin exhibit, and the fact that shortly after I finished the game, my friend showed me a picture of a penguin she met named Simon.

I associate Homestuck with Florence + The Machine, because that's what I was listening to when I finally got to Act 2. I'd tried to read the comic several times before then, but could never get past Act 1.

Within Temptation will always make me think of Harry Potter. Partly because of the feel of their music and partly because I've seen so many Potter fanmixes that included them (and done some myself).

It's kind of not related, but I always thought Marina and the Diamonds' E.V.O.L would have worked better than Let it Go in Frozen.

I have one particular mix CD that I strongly associate with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, because I listened to it a lot while reading episode transcripts and fic for a couple of weeks.

Scissor Sisters 'I don't feel like dancing' always makes me think of Dead Space 3 because for some reason it was stuck in my head whenever I played it(and only when I played it which is weirder).

Playing DnD usually makes me think of LoTR at some-point because I used to play sessions with those soundtracks playing in the background.

I can't believe I never thought of listening to LoTR while playing D&D. **adds to to-do list**

Omg doooo iiiiitt! :3

They're lovely soundtracks anyway and having them on while playing a fantasy game is all the better.

I always associate the ace attorney games with elite beat agents, probably because I was super into them around the same time, and they both have a similar light-hearted goofiness to them, I guess. I still love them both today!

Also, for a more bizarre one. The hazy maze cave level in Super Mario 64. I associate it with this random song from a sesame street movie, it's a song that Snuffy sings about his little sister and what a pain she is (it's the start of some movie about learning to appreciate your siblings idrk). But my brother always used to watch that movie in the same room where I played mario, and I just remember getting stuck in hazy maze cave while he listened to the same song over and over. So now when I hear the music from that one level, I sort of automatically hear the sesame street song in the background! And that's that.

Most of my fandom associations are because of fanvids, but...

When I first saw pictures of The Winter Soldier's outfit in Cap 2 I was reminded of Kai Leng from Mass Effect. Which...is not a good association to have at all, and for a while I hated the outfit because I was always thinking of douche-bag Kai Leng, but eventually, the more and more I saw it (especially when the trailers came out and we got to see it in action) it grew on me, and I thought to myself, "You look so much cooler than that asshole. It's okay WS, I forgive your handlers."

I have about a billion "This song makes me think of this fandom" associations, but most of them are pretty straightforward. But associating "Some Nights" with My Little Pony? Not sure where that came from. The song was on while I walking, my mind was wandering, and suddenly there's a whole mini-movie in my head about all of Ponyville rising up to take Canterlot back from the changelings. I can't not think of it every time I hear the song now, and I keep telling myself that one of these days I'll at least storyboard it.

The lines in Linkin Park's "Burn It Down":

I played solider,
You played king,
And struck me down,
When I kissed that ring.

Always make me think of Game of Thrones, despite not having read ASOIAF or watched GoT.

I associate the Kings of Leon song "Closer" with Perrin from the Wheel of Time series.

And I associate the Temper Trap song "Fader" with Mistborn.

And AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" has recently begun making me think of the Stormlight series.

(You may, at this point, be noticing a pattern)

I have also long associated Mr. Big's "I'm the One who Wants to Be With You" with The X-Files, which makes no damn sense.

AMVs have given me a few, but probably the most ridiculous is the fact that I keep forgetting that "Heart of Sword" is actually a Kenshin song, and not a DBZ song, because it's so thoroughly associated with a particular Trunks AMV.

I hate the character of Jim Moriarty a lot. I can't understand people who ship Sherlock/Moriarty even for laughs. Every time Moriarty shows up I just want to scrape him off the screen and throw him away.

But when I listen to "Suedehead," I like Moriarty a little. But only for exactly as long as the song is playing; then it goes away again.

Sometimes I listen to it just for the fleeting feeling of liking Moriarty.
