That later thing comes up in published erotica too (I'm guessing the ABO people got the idea from there). Its gross.

Does it? Ew. I've never read published erotica except that one time my college dorm had a boxful of free bodice rippers once and I didn't make it past the second, very short and badly written, chapter before I took it back to the box.

Bodice rippers usually aren't full on erotica, though they may edge into romantic erotica territory. Erotica is basically all about the sex with some plot around it and are completely explicit whereas the romantic side tends to fudge on details (so like NC-17 v. PG-13/R). Basically your average smutty fanfic.

And yes, there are a lot of disturbing tropes in them. There are very good ones. Actually, the more kinky ones tend to be better because they focus on safe, sane, and consensual (unless we're talking about 50 Shades of Grey which has none of those) whereas there is often this unspoken assumption of male dominance in the supposedly vanilla ones and it often crosses the line into rape (which according to the books always isn't rape because she wanted it or in the case of werewolf/shifter/whatever is okay because he really couldn't help it and she's totally okay with it because she understands).

So basically, published works aren't any different than fics. There are some really good ones and some really bad ones and a whole lot in between.
