I'm pretty good at it (up to a couple of metres), and determining volume as well, and it's just practice. I do a lot of carpentry you just get a feel for what the distance looks like. My ease with volume comes from cooking.

Same, I can judge volumes with pretty good accuracy by now just because I cook all the time.
