I always thought Patronuses represented someone important to you. Like how Harry's was a stag for his dad and Tonks's changed to a wolf after she fell in love with Lupin and Snape's was a doe to represent Lily.

I don't think that's so. Like Ron's is a terrier because of his loyalty, right? And Ginny had a horse (iirc?) for her fierceness. I think those Patronuses are just the ones that were highlighted because they were important to their character, but there are lots of others that are unexplained. I can't see that as being untrue, not everyone has somebody very important to them.

But if that were true, I'd be without a Patronus :( I don't have anyone very important to me, I'm not even close to my parents!

Ron's is a terrier because it is a yappy little animal that everyone likes to kick and is just annoying and useless. It is very apt to the character.

0/10 for effort, maybe try again tomorrow.

Everyone likes to kick terriers? Huh. I've never kicked one, myself.

Dude, you haven't lived. You should do it tomorrow. The rush is unreal.

...especially when their owner finds you.

Good point. Dye your hair red before you do it, if they think you're a ginger they'll be afraid to touch you in case your skin taints their soul like a real ginger's does.

I think it's more that your Patronus is whatever makes you feel either protected or able to protect yourself. For some people that's a (potential) lover or a family member, for others it's a representation of something in you that keeps you going.

I like this explanation.

I just always felt like there was more to it than "this represents you". I thought the feeling protected angle was what separated it from your animagus form.
