But then if they do that, what they love isn't really the character itself. They like the image and idea of the character, but they don't actually like the character. They're only interested in what they WANT the character to be but isn't.

And now you understand fandom. This little piece of insight you've just unloaded is EXACTLY why you see people becoming absolutely insane about their favorite characters and their headcanons and their ships, because they project so very hard onto those characters and headcanons and ships that they begin to view them as an extension of their own personal selves.

Yes, this is true. But they do not know it.

I do not defend them. I think they are looking at things the wrong way. However, I would like to try to understand them. I think there's something of value there, even though I think they are wrong.
