If you have any way to mix the tea and milk well it should taste just as good, though the froth is a neat part.

Mine cost £12 from the local M&S, and they are usually a little more expensive than other places. Have a look at a supermarket when you next have a chance. It's useful for other drink related things, even if you don't drink alcohol (I don't).

I had the same thought. "Oh, I want to make this! ...I don't have a cocktail shaker. D:" Something to keep an eye out for at the thrift store, I guess.

A cocktail shaker is just a screw-top container that won't leak. I'm pretty sure you don't need one to make bubble tea.
