COPP and VEIL. The former has some of the finest colour imagery and the most unusual plot devices I have ever encountered. Plus, possibly the best female character in the whole of the canon.

As to the latter, I'm so utterly alone in liking it?? Possibly because it is a part of "Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Missing Fucks" and so constantly gets overlooked. Even so, I've seen people praise YELL (which is a part of the same collection) for its treatment of the race issue, but no one ever praises VEIL for how humane and emotional it is, for how much its events say about Holmes's character AND ACD's own feelings on the matter. And even the people who like Violet Hunter fail to notice Mrs. Ronder.

How I wish it were filmed at least once.

Holmes at the end of VEIL literally made my eyes well up. Dear man. A big reason why I assume anyone who can say he's cruel and cold hasn't actually read or paid attention to all the stories.

Same. Whenever someone wants to disprove Doyle's claim that Holmes is unemotional, they invariably bring up the flower monologue. And I mean, I like it, too, but did everyone miss that part where Holmes made an incredibly passionate speech that had most likely saved a person's life? And how he was proud of it and called her "brave"?

I also love it from a Game perspective -- this isn't a case, or a mystery, or an adventure. It has nothing about Holmes' intellect or fancy badass skills. Watson wrote that whole story just because he wanted to tell everyone about how Holmes is a wonderful person and how he loves and admires him so much.

Your comment just reminded me of a conversation I had with a Holmesian friend of mine when we discussed humour in Doyle's stories. She remarked that Watson's first-person witticisms aren't the only type of humour to be found in the canon - in fact, Watson's descriptions of Holmes's jokes, smiles, twinkles etc. are also there to amuse. If Watson didn't find all that funny and/or heartwarming he wouldn't have included it in his works. For example, the BLUE scene where Holmes laughs is used to create this sweet Christmassy atmosphere and is in fact Watson's narrative analogue of warm laughter.

And it is sort of fascinating that these feelings probably belong to Doyle as much as they belong to Watson, seeing as Doyle didn't put much thought into his characters and mostly relied on his own emotional intuition.

Anyway, I feel like the fact that Watson used bits of his life with Holmes to give his stories emotional appeal, to make the reader smile or laugh, or, hell, even show the audience the friendship that existed between Holmes and him, though a well-established part of the Game, hadn't until recently been properly appreciated by me.

Yeeeeeeessssss. All of this. People ask me why I read and re-read Holmes stories over and over again if I already know the whole plot by heart, and I'm like, you don't get it. Watson's narration. It is the most wonderful thing in existence. It's not just what happened told in the first person. It's Watson sitting down and remembering this stuff and thinking about how he sees Holmes and deciding to write the story and Holmes this way and IT IS SO AWESOME.
