Anon who asked for anime recs yesterday

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Just wanted to thank all you lovely people who recced me stuff! My usual MO is to do two eps and if I don't like it by then, I don't bother with the rest; if I'm ambivalent, I give it up to five eps to convince me. So I spent yesterday watching two eps each of some of the animes you recced (I'll get to the rest over the next few days!) and I now want to talk about them I hope you don't mind =D

Stuff I liked:
Mononoke! This was the last one I watched, before going to bed... and I'm a terrible wuss when it comes to horror stuff, so I was totally freaking out but I still went WHAT at the tbc at the end of the first ep, and instantly went to the next. Shall definitely be continuing with this later (in daylight. bright, bright daylight).
The animation and storyboarding were gorgeous (especially those page flipping effects! and the stop-motion type movement in places!) and I lovelovelove the way they used those off-beats of silence, and patterns, and movement to show that something was very wrong. So amazing, seriously.
Also, question for those who're familiar with this: I read that this is a spin-off of another show; is Ayakashi worth watching? How similar/different is it to Mononoke?

Hyouka: Liking this so far! It's sort of slice of life and mystery at the same time (at least as far as the first couple of eps go) and I like both those genres so this is nice. Also really enjoying the art style when Chitanda gets curious about something, heheheh. S'like, it's your average high school typical art type thing, and then all of a sudden it DRAGS YOU IN.

Stuff I'm ambivalent about:
Log Horizon: Not something you guys recced, but something I was giving a shot at that point anyway. Still not sure if I like this or not (a lot of it seems pretty standard-cliche at this point, and the animation looks kinda generic), but I don't dislike it enough to drop it yet. And since Shiroe's only just formed Log Horizon, I'll keep watching to see if things pick up.

Hitsugi no Chaika: Oh man, this one. I dunno, the "I love and respect my beloved older brother so much" wink-wink-nudge-nudge jokes are just so tired. It's nowhere near as bad as some others, but still really annoying. Also the outfits really annoyed me too - what's up with Zita's outfit, seriously? Did she forget to put on her trousers? And don't even get me started on Akari's outfit. I had to pretend all the flesh-coloured bits of her legs were flesh-coloured leggings in order not to throw something at my screen. Just - lazy, pandering design, bah.
And yet, dammit, I want to see where the story goes. I sort of find myself thinking of Scrapped Princess? It has potential, but it's also something that'd be really easy to screw up. So I guess I'll give it a little longer to prove itself.

Stuff to rewatch/finish:
Gankutsuou and Mushishi! Thanks for reminding me about these, guys, definitely gonna start rewatching these when I'm done with the newer stuff. I'm excited about getting to finish Gankutsuou, heh.

There's more (plus I've got a bunch left to try out) but this is already getting long eheheh oops. Love to hear what you guys think of these anime (and if you've got any other recs)! Thanks again for all the recs~~ ^___^

Anon who recced Hyouka here!

And glad you're enjoying it so far! Also love the art shift when Chitanda gets curious. You'll have to tell me what you think of the some of the later mysteries when you finish it! I hope you keep updating us with your anime watching adventures!

SA

Oh, I tried Log Horizon when it first aired and remember that I ended up dropping it early on. Mainly because of the Shiroe's perverted friend and being a bit underwhelmed by the plot.

OP

Yeah, it feels like new anime think having a "pervert character" is par for the course, and even if it's not a totally fetishistic sort of show, you have to have at least one token pervert character. =__= I do like that Naotsugu keeps getting kneed in the face before he actually manages to complete (most of) his comments though!

And I may periodically check back in with what I think of the anime I'm trying! I tend to only come on when everyone's going off though, so we'll see *sheepish grin* Maybe I should call myself anime!anon? ^_^; (Or maybe I should just give in and deanon... *is a perpetual lurker*)

The last story in Ayakashi (last 3 episodes, I think?) are the ones that introduce the character of the medicine seller. I think it's important you go back and watch those episodes before you go any further since some of the characters reoccur soon. Also, the Ayakashi story is basically redone in a different time period in the last story arc of Mononoke.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. It only gets better. I think it's one of the most spectacular animes in existence, and it doesn't get near enough love. BTW, I usually don't like horror either, but this show is so rich and multi-layered that I think it defies being categorized. (Beyond "has supernatural elements", that is.)

Thank you~ Definitely going to watch at least the Bakeneko arc in Ayakashi (too late to watch that first, I'm almost done with Mononoke, heh). And this show is a prime example of why I don't like to list genres I will/won't watch - I usually hate horror, but wrapped up in this packaging... I can't stop watching! You're so right that it's hard to categorise in any meaningful way, and that's part of its charm =D

is Ayakashi worth watching?

Nah...

How similar/different is it to Mononoke?

Like anon said up there, only the last three episodes are the ones that deal with the first story featuring the Medicine Seller, and what created the Mononoke spin-off. Here's a handy-dandy resume of the series. But yeah, watch only the last three, which is the infamous Bakeneko/Cat Goblin arc.

Otoh, the opening is pretty good and the scenes/faces appearing change depending on the story.

I forgot to rec this, but have you seen Samurai Champloo?

Nah... - hah, that was a quick response XD

Just going by the episode summaries, I don't think I'll like the first part of Ayakashi that much - seems more like straight-up horror than Mononoke's genre-blending. I'll give it a shot, but I suspect I'll wind up only watching the Bakeneko arc and calling it done.

Yeah, I loved Samurai Champloo! Saw that back when it first came out and stalked each episode as it was released, heh. Should probably also put that on a to-rewatch-when-done-with-everything-new list...

Hahaha well what can I say? I'm a girl of few words! ;D Ngl I love horror, but by the second story in Ayakashi, I was ready to quit. Good thing I didn't because gosh.

Oh good! Then I have nothing more to rec. Instead I'm gonna be writing down what everyone else is reccing to you, because it seems we have similar tastes in anime.
