JUNE 16TH/19TH MARK YOUR CALENDARS FS

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Defiance!stan speaking.

DEFIANCE, only The. Best. SF. TV. Show. to hit the air since Babylon 5, RETURNS JUNE 16TH IN CANADA AND JUNE 19TH IN THE US.

Why do we caaaaaaaare, anon? I hear you asking. HEAR ME OUT.

Rockne S. O'Bannon.

Insane, intense, 150% no-holds-barred worldbuilding, and we are dropped into the middle of said fully-fledged world from the word go. Don't believe me? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defiance_(TV_series)

I did mention it was created by Rockne S. O'Bannon, yes? Surely this name stands on its own as to why you should watch the show. If not, let me add: Fully-fleshed-out characters and top-notch writing/plot match the worldbuilding in this.

OK OK you don't want to read the Wiki, here's the precis:

First Contact went about as badly as you would expect. The Votan Collective, made up of six different (highly diverse, highly detailed) species, each with their own language (we are talking several orders of magnitude higher conlang-fu than Marc Okrand, here, people) destroyed their own planetary system, and decide to set up shop on Earth. With a combo extermination/terraforming plan. Earth does not appreciate this, and fights back. Thus, the Pale Wars.

Earth is left a half-terraformed, smoking ruin, and the survivors of all seven species are now trying to peacefully coexist, in widely-separated city-states, one of which is St. Louis. Renamed to the eponymous Defiance, because it stands independent of all the other squabbling factions around it, and welcomes all races equally. Ish. (The "ish" part being the driver of most of the nuanced conflict in the show.)

Fully-fleshed out characters, you say, anon? Really? Yes, really. Let's start with the human Lawkeeper, or the ex-military, ex(ish)-con who ends up being the sheriff (Lawkeeper) in Defiance after he and the Irathient woman he rescued as an orphan roll up into town. (They are scavengers prior to this, salvaging Votan tech from the downed warships -- tech which absolutely gets featured/used in the show, particularly for the cliffhanger ending season 1.) Irisa, the Irathient, ends up playing a HUGE part in the cliffhanger, and the follow-through on the storyline is almost certain to be solid gold.

The current mayor of the town is also human, but rapidly being frozen out of her own governing council by the scheming Datak and Stahma Tarr, two Castithans, the generally all-around power-hungry/power-mad Power Couple. Can't say enough good about these two, they really are alien characters, but with a lot of well-thought-out conflicts, as their son is marrying a human girl, who coincidentally happens to be the daughter of the owner of the local mineshaft, who is in direct competition with the Castithans for power, money, control, etc. (Who is also Graham Greene. By the by.) There is currently conflict between Datak and Stahma negotiating their own roles in the marriage, as Castithan women are of the "seen but not heard" variety, when Stahma is really the brains behind Datak's brawn, and they are balancing very delicately between loving each other evilly and hating each other passionately. Oh, and both are having an affair, with the town madam, Kenya. Kenya also being the sister of the mayor. Who is bedding everyone in town but her sister. Apparently. Kenya runs the Need|Want, the local bar/brothel/gathering spot.

Still not sold? The absolutely snarktastic town medic is also Votan, and may or may not have been a female Indocene Mengele during the Pale Wars.

I mentioned the worldbuilding included insanely-detailed conlang (basically, created languages), yes? Well, you've got characters speaking in their native tongues, with subtitles. Six different species, six different languages, and oh yes, each one has its own writing system fully-developed. Fantastic attention to detail, and it really, really, pays off.

STILL not sold? Gamers! There is a MMPORG for the show. With completely different plots and just as fully-fleshed-out as the series itself.

Finally, if you marathon the show right now, you are in for one amazing cliffhanger that I cannot wait to see how they follow through on; with lesser talents at the helm, or a less solid foundation, I might be worried. As it is, I absolutely cannot wait!

Defiance!stan, over and out.

I keep meaning to pick this up. I saw part of the first episode and didn't love it, but everything I've heard about the show says I should keep watching because its right up my alley.

AYRT

If you didn't catch or infer a lot of the detail from the first ep, the Wiki really does help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defiance_(TV_series) and explains a lot of the little details first-time viewers/casual SF fans might miss. Not that I am suggesting you are the latter; but the show does move at a fair pace, and doesn't stop to explain a lot...something I appreciate, with the alien-ness of it all, but others might have trouble with. Do check out the Wiki, and also the Tumblr tags have a lot of images to whet your appetite as well (Visually very appealing, looks very "real" not too OTT either way.) Hope that helps!

Oh, I'm totally up for watching something from the beginning. Babylon 5 is pretty much my favorite show, and you can't exactly come in the middle of that. The first episode of Defiance just didn't grab me at the time. But when I have the time (aka when exams are over), I'm going to watch through the first season.

Jfc, I didn't read this but thanks for reminding me I like this show. I stopped watching in first season because I dropped cable.

This is one of the shows that I wanted to like and normally is right up my alley. I really looked forward to it before it first aired, then watched the first couple eps and just couldn't get invested. I might give it another try one day just because I love so many of the actors.

I had this vague notion that the MMORPG preceded the show, or at the least that they were developed in tandem ... no?

The MMORPG is kinda what turns me off the show actually. i don't want to watch something where I have to play a dumb video game to figure out what's going on.

You don't. I just watched the show and didn't play the game and I could follow what was going on. (I'm not entirely in love with the show, by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely had no issues figuring out what was going on.)

I didn't play the game at all and understood it perfectly well :) I strongly encourage you to check the show out!

Sweet, I didn't realise it was coming back already! Do we have an airdate for the UK yet? I think it aired at the same time as the US last year.

AW YES. Cannot wait, I've been waiting nearly a freaking year to see what's happening with my girl Irisa!

(And Kenya. Sob, Kenya.)
