Not that it's the same thing as abuse, but how many women fall prey to "Oh sure, he hit me. But it was only because Reason, and he says he'll never do it again." ? People are good at convincing themselves most anything when it comes to someone they love. Or people who insist family member would never ever commit a foul crime that they've been convinced of with no room for doubt? Or when your friend is kind of a serial rapist but he's so cool to hang around with can it really be THAT bad?

People are good at convincing themselves most anything when it comes to someone they love.

But also when it comes to something they really, really want to do even though they basically know it's stupid, self-destructive, or likely to hurt other people--or purely horrible, like continuing to hang out with their fun, cool friend the rapist. People are good at making excuses for their own bad behavior, or convincing themselves that what they want to do for purely selfish reasons is for everybody's good.
