I actually like the sound of German. Done by a native speaker, I don't find it any scarier than any other language. It's not as melodic as some, no, but that's not saying much. I tend to find the Galic languages more imposing. Maori, too.

Oh Maori is just flat out terrifying. I don't even think they have words for anything other than "we wish to bathe in your blood and feed your entrails to our toddlers".

'Kia Ora' technically means 'for life', I think, but when they scream it in the All Black's haka I want to hide.

The expression on Piri's face when he lead them in their haka at the 2011 World Cup was the really terrifying part. You half expected his head to start spinning or a chest-popper to show up. It made it really hard to remember he's one of the shortest on the team.

Kia ora means "be well", but the words in the haka are "ka ora", which can be interpreted a number of ways, including "it is life" and "I live". You should be scared, though -- it's a war chant, and the immediately preceding line is "ka mate", which is "it is death" or "I die". It's not really fair to take a war chant and assume that therefore the whole language is violent-sounding, though. Check out "Pokarekare ana", for example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITee3lUKYmc), which is a love song, or the news at Te Kaea (http://www.maoritelevision.com/tv/shows/te-kaea) for some alternatives.

I think Maori and German just sound harsh because we usually hear the language being shouted. When it's just a normal conversation I don't think they sound aggressive. Maori for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3wjVWAp3bY

Native German is beautiful. Honestly, any foreign language sounds harsh when it's shouted.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Heck, English can be terrifying when shouted. German isn't all that far off of our pronunciation either. There's just this perception that German things are scary. People like the brothers Grimm don't help with that.

German just sounds to me like you're speaking with sandpaper in your throat.

You need to hear a Hessian accent then. Alle Hese sind Vabräscha denn se glaue Aschebäscha...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what you said, but if you touch Poland or Belgium I will take it as a declaration of war. Also, was that an order to kill some group? I think it was.

Hessian is (IMO) the softest German accent. The text means "All Hessians are hardened criminals because they steal ashtrays," and - if you hear a German say it in both versions - showcases the differences between high and Hessian German pretty well. It is, in fact, so soft that it's almost impossible to sound imposing when speaking Hessian.

Swabian also generally seems to sound pleasant to foreign ears AFAIK. Check out some German accents. :)

You should have heard the old lady living next door when she got into a screeching match with someone, then. Mean old Hessian women can sound really terrifying while still speaking Hessian.
