Ever since I started taking meds for PCOS and actually getting regular periods, it started depending on my cycle. Now it goes from every couple of days to daily then to several times a day if I'm home alone. Rinse and repeat.

Sorry, if this is a bit personal, but are you on anything besides birth control? I'm on BC for PCOS, and it doesn't really seem to be working as much as I would like it too.

No problem at all. I'm not on birth control, actually. I'm only taking metformin and my tests show it's working well, my ovaries are getting less an less plagued with cysts. Doesn't mean you need to take the same med, though. Talk to your doctor, because not all BC works for PCOS and even with the ones that are supposed to work, you sometimes need to try several kinds.

My doctor has never even suggested that there were any non-BC meds for PCOS. I'm on low-estrogen pills right now because the high-estrogen gives me migraines. It does improve things some, but I still get days where I'm in so much pain I can't get out of bed (for which she won't prescribe anything for either).

nayrt

Metformin is a diabetes medication (or at least I know several people who take it for that reason and as far as I know that's the most common thing it's used for) and I know there's a link between diabetes and PCOS so it makes sense.

AYRT: Oh wow o.O You definitely need to go see a different doctor who will take you seriously and try to find something that works for you. It can be a serious condition that might result in a cyst burst so you really need to get it properly treated, not to mention live without pain. Which, by the way, I don't think the pain and the migraines are a PCOS thing, they sound like regular period problems. Really, your doctor sounds like an idiot and/or a jerk and I can relate to that, because it took me many doctors until I found one who believed me and got me tested for PCOS.

I'm no doctor but I know there are estrogen only pills. I don't know if they'd work for you but might be worth it to mention it. And yes, as other anon said, metformin is a diabetes medicine that's been used for PCOS for quite a while (because PCOS has to do with insulin resistance). I'm not diabetic btw. It's really weird your doctor didn't mention it. When I was diagnosed my former doctor presented both options right away and my current doctor asked me if I was on metformin right after I told him I had PCOS and was not on the pill.

Severe cramps, more severe periods, and migraines are actually all symptoms that can be caused by PCOS. Because PCOS effects hormone levels, and all of those things are caused by or effected by estrogen/progesterone levels (and plus, cysts can also cause pain that can add on to cramp pain). Which is why birth control is supposed to help because it evens out hormone levels.

At least as far as I understand. We do know that my migraines get worse if I'm on a high estrogen pill. There was a clear difference with that. And the pill does help somewhat. I used to be bedridden for 3-4 days doubled over in pain. So I'm doing better. But I still have times where ibuprofen does nothing and I can barely move.

My doctor is pretty shy about prescribing meds. She doesn't like changing my meds, and she also blames a lot on my weight and always wants me to lose weight before she'll do anything. She's what my school insurance covers, though. In another year I can find another doctor who is better.

Ah I see. Thanks for the correction. One of the reasons it took me years to find a doctor that diagnosed me correctly was that I didn't have any secondary PCOS symptoms, only almost no periods. After I got tested I added absolutely riddled with cysts to my small list. So I'm a little ignorant about said symptoms, sorry.

That sounds awful, anon. I really hope you get better soon and find the right meds and doctor.

Oh gosh, be careful with estrogen pills if you get migraines. There's apparently a significant increase in risk of stroke with that combination. D:
