I don't think, in most cases, it is particularly useful to rate "levels of bad" but I am kind of sick of this "rape is the absolute WORST WORST WORST thing a person could do!" Not because rape isn't horrible, but seriously? Worse than murder? Extreme torture? Genocide?

Frankly, I think him shoving Bran out a window with the intent of murdering him is a worse crime.

I think for many people, rape is seen as...excessive? I defintely think murder is a worse crime than rape. But I can see how some people (especially criminals in prison) would think rape is worse. Most murderers can come up with an excuse as to why they murdered someone. Rapists can't. There isn't any "I wanted money" or "I wanted revenge."

I'm not sure about that, I find that rapists justify themselves all the time. "S/he wanted it", "s/he was flirting and teasing me" - and that's just in the denying it was actually rape department (after all, a lot of rapists don't think of the act as rape at all). I also think a lot of rapists do rape in revenge, or to control someone, or intimidate someone, maybe comparable to beating the shit out of someone or even torturing someone.

I think the thing is, murder, theft, and violence at least have the potential to be framed in a way that even not-horrible people can understand why the attacker did it. Not justified, but explained and understood, whereas rape...not so much. In this SPECIFIC case, him pushing Bran out of the window wasn't vindictive or personal--it was a "pragmatic" choice (of a horrible person). But there's never a way to frame rape as "pragmatic."

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, why do you say that? If Criminal A rapes someone to intimidate them, scare them, for a reason involving control, that's not difficult to understand. If Criminal A rapes someone, in a medieval society, to say, impregnate them and therefore shame them as a slut out of wedlock, that could be pragmatic, too. Hell, maybe Jaimie rapes Bran to traumatize him - it'd probably be pragmatic, too.

Isn't there a stat suggesting that rape isn't usually about simple, uncontrolled lust, but generally about control? Control can very well be pragmatic.

DA

"Pragmatic" in the sense, I think, that most average people can imagine situations in which they could be driven to steal or kill out of pure necessity. But rape, like most forms of physical and/or psychological torture, is much more likely to be too extreme a path for a regular person to rationalize, since it's almost never a matter of life or death the way stealing money/food to eat or killing someone who's trying to kill you can be.

It's about desire. I can imagine myself in a situation where I would desire something so much I'd do anything to obtain it, and I have a vagina.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, some murderers and thieves and drug peddling shitheads don't like rapists - mostly because they love their mamas, their baby-mamas, and their sisters. So a rapist may or may not have issues in prison depending on the inmates he encounters or who may have heard about his crime prior to his arriving there.

But any crime involving a child - abuse, sexual abuse, kidnapping and murder - will guarantee a prisoner's stay in a protected yard with others like himself. Otherwise, he would be a walking dead man in a regular general population prison if his crime got out.
