I honestly don't know who she voted for in the last election. I was kind of afraid to ask. I know she votes more "this is the best candidate" then strict party lines, but she does tend to lean more conservative than I would have imagined. I know for a fact her husband did not vote for Obama in 2012 - I don't know if he voted for Romney or not. I know she voted for McCain in 2008, who's not quite as crazy as some of the party.

And I know that there are a lot of Republicans who are pretty pissed about the direction the party is currently going. Including gay Republicans, etc.

It just really surprised and confused me.

My father is extremely liberal in many ways, but he was also almost ready to vote for McCain right up until Palin happened. Hell, even I think that McCain isn't even all that bad, really, when he isn't trying to pander to the Tea Party.

That said, I can see where you're coming from in terms of surprise. I'd say...don't worry so much about it? Local politicians tend to be either super extreme right/left or really mild and open-minded, so it could be that your friend voted for the latter.
