Amsterdam?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Is anyone on FS from Amsterdam/visited Amsterdam? I'll have a layover there and I wanted to know what/where I should visit/do, particularly because I will be there at night (not trying to get raped, mugged, lost, etc.). Any places good for a Dutch breakfast (nothing expensive)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can't help you, since I was there during the day. I was just grateful to to have a nice shower at the airport! One other thing, if you're a gardener and American: don't be tempted by the shop selling flower bulbs. Regardless of what the vendors say, you won't be allowed to take them through Customs.

AYRT

Thanks! Yeah, I hadn't thought about that, but it makes sense. US Customs is fairly strict.

Dammit time zones.

As an actual dutch person: The first thing you need to think about that Shiphol airport is actually quite far away from Amsterdam itself so you have to get train tickets to Amsterdam Central station before you can do anything.

For activities it depends a bit on how long you are staying. I would advise to avoid the whole red lights/coffee shop district that is where most pickpockets and drug dealers are. If you want to see the city I would recommend using one of the touring boats. They generally offer better views then walking and a a guided tour.

Or you could visit a museum. The Anna Frank house is pretty small and busy. If you are interested in Jewish history I would recommend the Jewish museum. It has more information but is a bit further from the station. Closer to the station there are the Rijksmuseum (for national Dutch history and a lot of golden age Dutch masters), The van Gogh museum or the Scheepsvaartmuseum (National maritime museum tends to be less full of tourists)

For cheap breakfasts I can't recommend anything. There are no hot meals for lunch though that is something most visitors complain about so keep it in mind.

Good luck with your trip :)
