Pollyanna bullshit. People are superficial shits who would rather spend time with a shallow but gorgeous person than with anyone who is on the ugly side of plain or worse, no matter how lovely their personality.

I'm actually kind of uncomfortable around really pretty people. I'm trying to get over it, because that's "shallow" too, but I'm plain-looking and it's easier for me to talk and spend time with people who aren't conventionally attractive.

Good people will attract good people, no matter what they look like. The social groups I know are my evidence of this. I personally have no time for anyone unless they're kind and also interesting. And I will even take kind over interesting. Pretty people who aren't either of these get nowhere with me. And most of my friends have the same attitude, if their social groups are anything to judge by.

I'm sorry that you're either an asshole or have had terrible experiences, I guess?
