Re: 1st or 3rd person?

I hate first person, mostly because I'm so picky about characterization/identifying with characters.

I'm worse about it with fanfiction. The moment a first person story deviates from my expectations of the character, I'm done. At least with third person, it's more removed, so I can attribute a character's actions to something more palatable to me. When it's in first person, there's no wiggle room. For example, someone puts a plate of cookies on a table with a smile on their face. If it's a villain, and they don't normally smile, I can attribute it to something nasty's going to go down. But in first person, if they're "baking cookies for their loved one".. yeah. No. BACKBUTTON!

With original fiction, I have to really, REALLY like a character to stick with a first person story. Love "The Hunger Games" movies, but couldn't stand the books because Katniss annoyed me while I was in her head. But watching the movie, I could see her as a kickass survivor, rather than just another whiny teenager.

Hope that all makes sense. :)

That makes lots of sense, thanks for responding! The "wiggle room" concept is definitely familiar to me. And I felt a similar way about The Hunger Games; I really liked the story concept, but the narration felt off to me. I think first-person has some pitfalls that 3rd doesn't. But some of my long-term favorite books are in first person, so . . .
