The musical is much slashier than the book, and it's better written. As for Good Omens, I personally prefer Vimes/Vetinari to Crowley/Aziraphale as far as Pterry slash ships goes (and the Watch books over Good Omens), but that's just me.

I thought the book was slashier. In the musical they had that "both in love with the same guy" thing going. Glinda in the book, if I remember correctly, was never into Fiyero and didn't seem interested in men at all, even her marriage seemed like it was just a political/image thing. So I was reading her as totally gay and totally in love with Elphaba. In the musical, though, I ship Glinda/Fiyero/Elphaba.

Spoilers for the sequel books

Especially in Out of Oz, Glinda seems really gay, (not to mention Liir being explicitly bisexual, and the implication of Rain saying she always knew Tip/Ozma was a woman).

Ayrt: I still haven't read Out of Oz, but now I want to even more.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I always thought Glinda being in love with Elphaba was just another fact of the book. I didn't realize it was being interpreted differently until it was brought up in discussion.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt: Same. I was baffled when I saw people saying "She can't be gay, she has a husband." because it seemed pretty clear to me that she wasn't having sex with her husband. But these people were also saying "Slash is gross, why do gay people have to make everything gay, etc." so obviously they had a bias. If there's an actual non-homophobic well thought out alternate interpretation of her character, I'd be interested in reading it.

Totally agree. I actually read the book interpreting it as an Elhpaba/Glinda love relationship that could never be. I was surprised to see others didn't interpret the same way.

You could be right. The general feeling I remember from the book was that Glinda liked Elphaba, but Elphaba never seemed to care as much about Glinda as she does in the musical, especially after they part ways in the capital. It's been a while since I read it though, so maybe that's why the musical seems a lot more Elphaba/Glinda shippy in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - I did think it was very one-sided on Glinda's part in the book but I also saw it that way in the musical. Elphaba leaves with Fiyero and Glinda thinks she's dead (right? Maybe I'm misremembering?) so yeah. Not exactly requited.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I disagree. I didn't think the musical was anywhere near as slashy as the book. That scene on the train/in Oz in the books was SUPER gay.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
The Watch books aren't slashy though. Like, people may ship things from them, but the books themselves don't really contain any fodder the way GO does.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I love good omens but it's really overrated.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I just realised that I didn't see Wicked. Which version that I can find online is the slashiest? No matter if it's old, I like old.

I couldn't make it through Wicked at all. Maybe I should try and give it another go, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you do, you should stop after that and pretend the other books never happened, though.

That bad, huh? I wasn't too impressed with his 'Confessions of An Ugly Stepsister' either tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess after a certain bestiality scene, rape that ends in a pregnancy and a happy marriage sounds like a walk in the park but it made me really uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think most of the sequels are that bad. EXCEPT for the one about the Lion. That one was a piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the last one but the second one is boring as hell and the third one kind of just creeped me out in addition to being boring.

Me too when it comes to Good Omens. It's cute, and I love reading the gay into it, but it's seriously not that amazing a book.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly love GO for the horsepersons and I don't really care about the main slash ship.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Horseperson love unite!

(Weirdly, I kinda ship DEATH/Pestilence, even though Pesti is mentioned in all of, like, a footnote and a half. Really, what was the black death but some really crazy flirting between them?)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most people like the musical more then the book anyways.
I sure do. I mean ugh, I've owned it for five or so years and I still can't get though the first few chapters, no matter how many times I try to read them.
Biggest waste of seven bucks ever. >:(

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore Good Omens, particularly Crowley and Death, but I've always thought it had kind of a weak ending and didn't find Adam and his gang all that interesting (though the setup for his situation was fun.) Anyway, whatever floats your boat, OP.
