What if it's a character who is devout in an in-universe religion?

I think that might be part of their point.

It seems to me OP has a problem with non-Christian characters being written as Christians in fic, not with characters being written as devout.

(And I agree with them. It's poor writing)

As long as it fixes canon by showing it a as a negative thing, that is okay.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
yr jking rite

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Religion is pretty much a force for bad right now, its been hijacked by pedos, TeaPs, and one-handed mullahs too much. I can't take any canon character seriously when they profess a religious belief unless it is as a set up for them to realize their faith has been misplaced and to convert to agnosticism at the very least.

Please, expand on this at length.

*sips tea*

No, if you aren't going to get all frothing and irate then there is no fun in it. Spoilsport. :Takes ball and Goes Home:

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're sipping their tea in a passive aggressive way?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You're one of those open-minded types. I can tell.

An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There is nothing wrong with having an open mind. Just don't leave your mind so open, your brain falls out.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. Because the adherents of a religion are far more important than the tenets thereof, and there's no adherents of said religions just quietly living their lives and doing good where they can.

You're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone lives in American or a muslim theocracy, fyi.

This, right here, it what is wrong with smug atheists pontificating about religion. They do not know what they are talking about and they don't trouble to find out.

You're a bigot and very closed-minded. Plz grow up.

My silmaril would like to introduce you to her benefactor goddess Elbereth.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Like, as a hard agnostic - you realize, of course, that being agnostic and being religious are not contradictory, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I (a marginal Christian) am in a fandom right now where "main character is devout in an in-universe religion" applies in such a way that both monothiesm of any kind and atheism would be logically impossible to the point of being bug-nuts insane.

One of my fandoms is for Nintendo's "Kid Icarus" series - particularly the 2011 game, "Uprising," which gave the characters actual characterization. It's a banter-fest. The game series is loosely based upon Ancient Greek mythology and *every character* with speaking lines either serves a god, meets servants of the gods, or *is* a god. The protagonist, Pit, is an angel serving the Goddess of Light and his utter devotion to her in the story and in his lines is the stuff of legends. The Goddess Palutena for him is a best friend, family, possible love-interest and HIS LADY, HIS GODDESS all rolled into one. There's just no way he's going to ditch his in-universe "religion" for any other. And, of course, she's *right there* to give him mission assignments, food-gifts, resurrection when he falls in battle, and the power of flight. Even light agnosticism just doesn't apply.

The closest thing to an atheist in his world? Dark Pit, his clone/not-so-evil twin who knows the gods exist, of course, he kicks some of their asses, but who chooses to *serve* none.

So, there's an example right there for any of us who do fan art or fan fic or fan comics of a fandom / canon where the in-universe religion is fleshed out, the characters all have it, and there's no deviation if you want to stay true enough to the world to be doing *fan* work.

I'd like to make mention of worlds like Middle Earth or Faerûn.

Middle Earth is still so closely linked to the Valar and still have Maiar wandering around that it would be strange to find people who are totally atheist. At the most you'd find people who are relaxed and perfunctory about how they believe, like I imagine Hobbits to be.

In Faerûn it's not just stupid to be atheist, but you'd be guaranteeing yourself to a terrible afterlife too. Everyone has a god they have chosen as a patron, and most will leave small offerings to some of the major ones who could affect everyday life, like Tymora (Good Luck), Beshaba (Bad Luck), Umberlee if they're going sailing (evil sea goddess) or Talos (god of storms).

Some worlds are set up specifically to have active background religions in them. How much in everyday life that affects the feature characters depends really on how much you care to show about how devout they are. You can make a passing mention of their morning or evening prayers, or they can be a zealous campaigner for their god, or their god could come up only as "Oh my god!" exclamations.
