I think people just tend to view relationships between twins as being deeper and more profound than regular siblings.

duh?
what grosses me out is what they see as deeper and more profound about it and how they depict it. mostly romantisized co-dependence and being the "same" person.

But maybe that's what led to the incest?

Just because you ship something, doesn't mean you ship it as a healthy relationship. I've seen a lot of fics where twincest and incest ships start out as codependent and romanticized sibling relationship, which why it slips into incest.

that's an interesting thought, an IC reasoning, but trust me, nobody I saw shipping twincest gave it that much thought. It's all for display, which reminds me in a creepy way of voyeurism of seeing "clones" fuck (we already got creepy guys hitting on us like that!!) Somehow I always end up in fandoms with it.

I saw some more interesting incest fic which did this and showed it realistically /fucked-up/, like, idk Stridercest and Lalondecest from Homestuck.

However, the moment these characters get turned into twins (because they're kinda sci-fi clones in canon), it's all the shit you usually see in shipping dialed-up to eleven. cutesey romanticizing of co-dependence of seme/uke caliber and no resemblance of a sibling relationship. Normally I give it a pass, because the shippers are often young, but I can't ignore it with twincest.
makes me puke.
