Yeah. Those sayings are made up by people who've been fortunate enough not to be born into a dysfunctional family, or who are in deep, deep denial. It's not like I hate my mother, but I do hate such saccharine sentiments.

Yeah, and it blows my mind when people hear an abused person's entire story and then go, "Well, you need to forgive your mom/dad! It isn't healthy to hold on to that resentment and you'll be sorry when they're dead!" Maybe it isn't healthy to hold on to hatred, but those kinds of statements definitely aren't helpful either.

I fucking hate the conflation of "letting go" and "forgiving". I can move past things that happened. That doesn't mean I have to forgive the people who were shitty to me.

Well, it depends. You can forgive someone without letting them back into your life. Forgiveness doesn't mean acting like nothing happened.

Yeah, this. I can forgive and let go of shit that happened in the past, but if in the present someone is still treating me like garbage and/or constantly bringing up reminders of the past (especially in a trivializing or victim-blaming way), then fuck 'em.
