For example, a fic starts out fun and then devolves into misogyny (most often) or slight bigotry and/or homophobia... I wish I could cut and run. Decidedly. And I disagree that it's petty. I don't want to be associated with that kind of crap, but you can't always tell at the beginning.

Mm, true. I'll give you that. I wouldn't want to be associated with any of that either. I guess I've never run into an occasion where a fic went off the rails in that way before.

You're lucky, then. I've run into so many that started great and went places I did not expect.

My most vivid memory is a fic that started as a fantastic surreal comedy and ended up as an explicit incest threesome, just out of nowhere. I was so sad because I wanted to be able to leave glowing a review on it and tell everybody else how great it was, but the swift about turn was too much for me.

Homophobia is another big one. I find this in a lot of slash fics. They start promising, build up agreeable tension, then suddenly throw in a shockingly homophobic clunker or two half-way through.
