Battlestar Galactica

I really want to try watching this show, but the first few episodes of it haven't really grabbed me. Can anyone 'sell it to me'/give me motivation to keep watching it?

Honestly, if the first couple of episodes haven't sold you, I don't think I could. The first season is pretty much my favorite, with two and three being pretty good and things nosediving from there. So. Maybe it just isn't for you?

NuBSG or 70s BSG?

Depends, are you a self-cutter? If you are then just plunge in anywhere mid-season one. If you actually like Happiness and Joy in any form, then move onto another fandom because NuBSG is just episode after episode of misery upon misery. Except the episode Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down, that is hilarious.

Oh, should clarfiy, I'm talking about NuBSG!

STARBUCK

AND PRESIDENT SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

Basically this is a show that had the opportunity to write different female characters well and then actually did so

You know, I never considered watching the show because of how much I heard of people complain about the writing but you actually have me considering it.

There were some... questionable decisions. But I can say the questionable decisions didn't seem at all gender related. This is not a show that is weird about women. Granted someone will probably come along and disagree.

There's one Hot Chick character but it makes sense for her to be the Hot Chick. You'll see why.

Yeah, I heard about a lot of questionable decisions in general but not about the women. No one really seemed to talk about them much.

I'm honestly fine with Hot Chick characters. They can be fun if you wright them right.

Well, they wrote decent female characters for about a season (apart from Head!Six), then it just sort of descended to your average soap opera level of female character writing. Both of them ultimately had their lives revolve around a man's actions and decisions and reacted rather than acted. Same with pretty much every other female main cast member. By the end Classic BSG and even Galactica 1980 were better in writing female cast's parts.

I kind of disagree, but I think we probably have different standards. Part of the issue is that both Adamas are guys, so... yeah.

I would say the women are no more poorly written than the guys.

Seriously, look at the trainwrecks Lee and Helo and Chief and Gaita turned into by the end.

Fuck yes Starbuck, she was the reason I started watching BSG and then I ended up really enjoying it... until the beginning of the last season then it just lost me. I still think back fondly on what I watched but I've got no real desire to finish it.

I watched two seasons based solely on the fact that I liked the board game, and I was promised that Gaius was going to go full-on hallucination schizophrenic (crazy is my fandom catnip, okay?) Kind of lost interest after that, but I keep meaning to come back to it. Also holy fuck that boardgame is awesome.

Laura Roslin is my favorite female character in the history of anything ever ♥

The characters really are something, in my opinion anyhow. Complex and real and the female characters in particular are wonderful because they're all so different and so flawed and so gorgeous, and none of them is expected to be The Woman, if that makes sense? They're just them.

And the show is full of grey areas and moral questioning and politics and myth and so on. I find it utterly beautiful. Some people feel that they writing goes downhill as it progresses, but while there are aspects of it that I personally would have done differently, I actually love every bit of it.

But it also makes me cry more than any other show ever, so if that's a problem, don't watch it.

Oh please Starbuck is nothing but the fiesty-90s action chick, only IN SPACE! In fact she could even be the fiesty 80s action chick at times.

...did you not watch past the mini-series?

I got as far as a couple of episodes of Fat!Lee.
